Your AC has been running for hours and the house still feels wrong. The air coming through the vents isn’t as cold as it should be, the humidity is making everything feel thick, and your electric bill last month was higher than usual. Most homeowners in that situation assume the refrigerant just needs a top-off the way you’d add oil to a car engine between changes. That assumption is one of the most common misconceptions we hear, and it matters more now than it ever has.
Refrigerant doesn’t get used up. Your AC system runs on a sealed closed loop, and under normal operation, the refrigerant charge stays constant year after year. When a system is low on refrigerant, it didn’t consume it. It leaked somewhere. Understanding that distinction changes how you read the symptoms and how seriously you treat them. We’ve been diagnosing refrigerant leaks in central Connecticut since 1994, and we’ve held an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau continuously since 2004. Refrigerant leak diagnosis is something we’ve done thousands of times, and the signs are recognizable once you know what to look for.
How Refrigerant Actually Works in Your AC
Refrigerant moves through your system in a continuous loop, absorbing heat from the air inside your home at the evaporator coil and releasing that heat outside. The system is engineered to hold a precise manufacturer-specified charge, and any deviation from that amount reduces its ability to transfer heat effectively. A little low means noticeably reduced performance. Significantly low means the system is working hard to accomplish very little.
That’s why adding refrigerant without finding and repairing the leak is a false fix. The refrigerant continues to escape, the charge keeps dropping, and the compressor (the most expensive component in the system) keeps running under increasing stress. A proper repair means locating the specific failure point, fixing it, pressure testing the system, and recharging to the manufacturer-specified amount. Anything short of that is just delaying the same conversation.
Warning Signs Your AC May Be Losing Refrigerant
Some signs of a refrigerant leak are obvious enough to catch quickly. Others are easy to explain away as something less serious. Here are the clearest indicators:
- Warm or weak air despite constant running. When the refrigerant charge drops, the system can’t absorb enough heat indoors. The air coming out of your vents feels lukewarm even when the thermostat is set low and the system has been running for a long time.
- Ice or frost on the refrigerant line or evaporator coil. A pressure drop caused by a leak makes the remaining refrigerant expand and cool far more than it should, freezing the moisture that collects on the coil. If you see ice anywhere on your system, turn it off and call a technician.
- Hissing or bubbling sounds. Pressurized refrigerant escaping through a pinhole or crack in the copper tubing produces a hissing sound. A bubbling sound typically indicates refrigerant escaping in liquid form. Both are worth taking seriously.
- Indoor humidity that won’t drop. Your AC removes moisture from the air as part of the cooling process. A low refrigerant charge reduces that dehumidification capacity, so the house feels sticky and damp even with the system running. In July in Wallingford, when outdoor humidity is already high, a house that just feels “off” is worth paying attention to.
- An unexplained spike in your electric bill. A system running short on refrigerant can’t reach the thermostat set point efficiently, so it runs longer cycles and draws more electricity trying to compensate. If your bill is higher than it should be for the weather you’ve been having, the system is working harder than it needs to.
- Oily residue near fittings or the outdoor unit. Refrigerant travels through the system alongside compressor oil. When refrigerant escapes at a joint, fitting, or coil connection, it carries a small amount of that oil with it. An oily or greasy film around line connections or near the outdoor unit is a strong indicator that refrigerant has been escaping from that point.
What Causes Refrigerant Leaks & Why They Get Worse
Leaks don’t always start as obvious cracks. Many begin as problems invisible to the naked eye.
Formicary Corrosion
Formicary corrosion is one of the most common culprits on systems installed in homes. Organic acids (primarily formic and acetic acid, released by everyday household products like adhesives, cleaning solvents, paints, and building materials) react with copper coils in the presence of moisture and oxygen, eating through the metal and creating pinholes too small to see until refrigerant loss becomes noticeable. The result is straightforward: the coil develops microscopic holes that grow over time.
Vibration Fatigue
Vibration fatigue is the other common cause. Years of compressor operation create constant low-level vibration throughout the system. That vibration can loosen flare connections and cause hairline cracks at soldered joints, particularly on systems that are 10 or more years old. A fitting that was perfectly sealed in 2015 may not be in 2025.
Running a system that’s low on refrigerant accelerates both problems. The compressor works harder and runs hotter trying to meet demand it can’t satisfy, which increases wear on the component you most want to protect.
Repair or Replace: The Question a Refrigerant Leak Forces
For homeowners with systems installed between 2010 and 2024, a refrigerant leak now raises a financial question that didn’t exist a few years ago. Under the EPA AIM Act, manufacturing of new residential AC equipment using R-410A was banned as of January 1, 2025. R-410A is still legal to use for servicing existing systems, but supply is tightening and recharge costs have risen roughly 20 to 40 percent since 2024.
That shift changes the math on a repair-or-replace decision. If your system is relatively new and in good mechanical condition, repairing the leak and recharging makes sense. If the system is more than 10 years old, the compressor is showing signs of stress, and you’re looking at escalating recharge costs each season, the honest answer may be that replacement is the better investment.
